Grace: Theologians have spent thousands of pages explaining what grace is and how it is played out in the Christian life. As a youth pastor I am challenged to try to define theological terms in ways that students can grasp, understand, and apply to their lives. One of the clearest ways I can explain grace is as follows: Grace is an underserved gift.
Chick-fil-A: In my opinion this is one of the best restaurants on the planet. This restaurant chain makes the news from time to time. It has been reported that someone was awarded free Chick-fil-A for life. Wait, the story gets better. This same person is guaranteed a job in the future. Beyond this Chick-fil-A is also going to host a birthday party for this lucky individual. These are all examples of things that usually need to be earned or paid for. However, the best part is that the person literally did nothing to earn any of this. All that that this person did was exist!
Grace+Chick-fil-A= A beautiful illustration: The truth is this person, mentioned above, was shown so much grace from Chick-fil-A. This person happened to be a baby who was born in one of this restaurant’s bathrooms last month. Existence was all that she did.
The parents appropriately named the baby Gracelyn. She did nothing to earn these gifts that Chick-fil-A is giving her. It is truly an example of grace.
