Donald Whitney on Selecting a Book to Read

There are MILLIONS of books available for you and I to read. These books serve different purposes: education, recreation, etc. How can we decide which books are most helpful to read? Well, the answer to this would be complex. However, Don Whitney has a helpful thought in his book titled Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. Although this quote doesn’t give direct guidance, it is helpful to think about the books that we read in terms of time investment and the effects that it will have on our lives for eternity.

This quote is from page 283. There is a link at the end of this post for you to purchase this resource if you want to learn more about the spiritual disciplines and how to apply them to your life!

“So don’t waste your time on books you’ll regret reading when you look back upon them from the perspective of eternity. I believe in recreational reading. Not every volume must be didactic or even theological. Some books are just for relaxation and refreshment. But even these should be edifying and help you in some sense to love God with your mind.”
