Jerry Bridges on Preaching the Gospel to Yourself

Preaching the Gospel is a phrase that people familiar with church should be used to hearing.  However, we usually think of preaching the Gospel to other people. This is good. We should preach the Gospel to others often. Beyond preaching the Gospel to others, we must also preach the Gospel to ourselves. We hear and read thousands of words in a week and we should not rely on our time when we are physically in church to hear the Gospel being preached to us. We must preach the Gospel to ourselves.

Jerry Bridges urges his readers to preach the Gospel to themselves in the following paragraph from page 49 of his book The Disciplines of Grace.

"To preach the gospel to yourself, then, means that you continually face up to your own sinfulness and then flee to Jesus through faith in His shed blood and righteous life. It means that you appropriate, again by faith, the fact that Jesus fully satisfied the law of God, that He is your propitiation, and that God's holy wrath is no longer directed toward you."

May we be people who preach the Gospel to others and to ourselves!
