Religious Similarities between Pre-WWII Germany and the current USA

My eyes were opened to the religious similarities between pre-World War II Germany and the current status of the United States of America. For hundreds of years in Germany many people considered themselves Christians. In his biography of Bonhoeffer, Eric Metaxas explains this concept on page 174 by writing “For many Germans, their national identity had become so melted together with whatever Lutheran Christian faith they had that it was impossible to see either clearly. After four hundred years of taking for granted that all Germans were Lutheran Christians, no one really knew what Christianity was anymore.”

Although there are a range of differences between the current  United States and Germany’s status during the time period this quote is referring to, I still believe the United States is in a similar predicament because for many years a majority of Americans have considered themselves Christians. This has potential horrific effects on our culture because many claim to be Christians who cannot even explain the gospel. This portrays Christianity wrongly and gives a tainted image about what it means to be a follower of Christ.

The United States’ resemblance of Pre-World War II Germany is a serious problem that should urge youth pastors to preach and teach biblically solid sermons and lessons to the the teenagers who are growing up in a confused culture. This will help those who are listening to better understand the gospel and grow a godly worldview. The students will be empowered because they will be given a deeper understanding of the gospel which will help them be able to explain it better to their family, classmates, and friends.

Misconceptions about what it means to be a true follower of Christ will deteriorate as biblical truth is proclaimed in the church and then shared by God’s people into the community.
